• Rather than perceive jazz as Theodor Adorno does -- another commodity produced in the culture industry -- it is asserted that jazz should be viewed as a musical-aesthetic object. This reevaluation entails studying how the interaction between musical artist & subject material results in the objectification of certain social & historical tendencies. Instead of viewing jazz musicians as free to compose anything, this new "Adornian aesthetics of jazz" understands musical composition as an attempt to resolve problems with musical material. It is claimed that Adorno's (1997 edition) aesthetic theory has significant implications for studies of jazz, & this perspective is applied to the works of John Coltrane to illustrate the implications of Adorno's aesthetic theory for jazz studies.
