Tourism is one of the major sources for the transformation of cultures worldwide. Local host destinations commodify aspects of their culture for tourist demand as tourists actively seek out experiences of authenticity. For this project, I examined cultural tourism in a case study of French Acadian performers in Prince Edward Island, the smallest province of Canada. As tourism grew, locals recognized the potential benefits this new economy could bring and staged expressions of culture, such as performances of dance, music, or song, were developed to meet new needs. Cultural performances at tourism venues and on stages are accepted as an authentic aspect of Acadian culture and a genuine representation of this culture. Staged performances, a new tradition, were developed in relation to everyday events of dance and music found in the home demonstrating one's identity.
