The distinction between night and day is part of the basic elements of our existential experience. When the night falls, something happens inside us. With the modernization of society, and the advent of public lighting, there was a tendency to enter this "other side" of our life -- to make life happen "in full daylight". The literary evocations by Eugene Sue, Edgar Allen Poe and Charles Dickens give us material to illustrate this process. The night has been used as a metaphor in c the debate on morality and security in urban life. The romanticism of the night has not yet been exhausted since we still enjoy going out in the evening. The article ends with a description of a walk through Berlin at night and shows how the citizen's attention is attracted. We abandon ourselves to the night believing that all will become clear in the morning. Adapted from the source document.
