Welsh examines the experience of shame in William Shakespeare's King Lear by using Charles Dickens' novel entitled Little Dorrit. He concludes that King Lear and Little Dorrit have the great merit of both taking shame seriously and insisting that it can nevertheless be placed in perspective. Moreover, he opines that the formal Judeo-Christian doctrine has found guilt to be more manageable: patriarchy, and a particular religion, makes guilt readily definable as disobedience, and guilt can be assuaged through confession.
