• In the final months of the Second Republic, Louis Napoleon issued a decree abolishing all existing festivities and stipulating that henceforth the fifteenth of August, the Saint-Napoleon, would be celebrated as France's national day. Here, Hazareesingh attempts to make sense of the Bonapartist festivities of the fifteenth of August in terms of the local sphere as a site of political acculturation in nineteenth-century France, as an integral component of the tradition of civic festivities in the Revolutionary and post-Revolutionary eras and as a reinvented tradition.
