  • The identity struggles in 16th-century England involving the Morebath parishioners & the power of Henry VIII have parallels with post-September 11 (2001) America. Identities become political when governments become involved in threat. The religious identities of Morebath parishioners became political identities as the king & his successors started to direct & manipulate allowable responses to religiously cast questions about boundaries concerning "you," "us," & "them." American identities -- as patriots or not -- grow all the more politicized as the government interests itself in "we-they" boundaries. Arab Americans & American Muslims struggle to situate themselves on the correct side of increasingly risky boundaries. While many view identity claims chiefly as a species of apolitical self-expression, identity claims & their accompanying accounts are, rather, a matter of serious politics, exemplified by social movements from their origin in the 16th century. 10 References.
