  • Argues that the democratic revolution of 1989-90 in Nepal which forced King Birendra Bir Bikram Shah to accept a constitutional monarchy is currently endangered. Indications of Nepal's political regression since 1990 include legislative deadlocks, intense parliamentary fights; corruption; a deadly Maoist insurgency; the 2001 murder of nine members of Nepals royal family; & the 2005 assumption of absolute authority by current King Gyanendra & his lawless army. It is contended that the situation in Nepal represents an enormous crisis for South Asia. In addition, it serves as a warning to those who believe democracy can be established simply through the creation of a constitution & an election or two without the dedication of a political class willing to move past differences & greed to work together to build democratic institutions. Special attention is given to rising alarm on the part of the international community; the shut-down of parliament by King Gyanendra who declared a state of emergency on 1 February 2005; UN human rights activities; & the dimming prospects for a political solution.
