  • Europe's major human rights problem is the plight of the Gypsies or Roma, a group consistently maligned & excessively romanticized. Recently, Europe, international institutions, & donor organizations have begun to address the problem. Simultaneously, the Roma themselves are beginning to speak out & organize on their own behalf. Their history is one of persecution & survival. Their stereotype is one of poverty, illiteracy, criminality, & sexual permissiveness. This has been the justification for their persecution. The reality of their history & stereotyping lies somewhere in between the extremes. Their cause is compared to the situation of African Americans. There has been recent documentation of anti-Roma prejudice, which is a step forward. The Roma themselves are starting to be concerned with education & to promote media sensitivity. E. Larsen
