  • This Vol in The American Moment series (Stanley I. Kutler, series editor) examines the circumstances & decision-making processes that led three US Presidents -- Harry S. Truman, Lyndon B. Johnson, & George Bush -- to engage their country in limited war (respectively, in Korea, Vietnam, & the Persian Gulf) in the latter half of the 20th century. The crisis situations in these countries & their escalation into war are recounted, exploring why each President, with his advisors, decided that military action was the only choice to make in order to protect US security. Each decision is evaluated in terms of how effectively the President gauged domestic interests & potential threats posed to them, considered alternatives to war, adhered to constitutional procedures, & developed support from the Congress, general public, & international arena to wage limited war. Also considered are how each President initiated or responded to diplomatic overtures & opportunities for peace, & the role of presidential leadership quality in shaping each war's outcome. Following a Foreword by the series editor & a Preface, the book contains an Introduction, 6 Chpts, a Conclusion, & a Bibliographical Essay. 3 Maps. K. Hyatt Stewart
