• Draws on personal interviews & statistical information to explore the nature & consequences of political choices made by clergy from Protestant, Catholic, & Mennonite communities in relation to local, city, & national/international politics. Scholars from various disciplines also examine the effect of race, gender, & neighborhood characteristics on political choices, as well as how the political action or inaction of religious leaders impacts careers, congregations, & American democracy. It is maintained that the position of clergy, both as private citizens & church leaders, provides them with a unique ability to influence how others approach politics. The introductory chapters present a theoretical foundation that provides a framework for understanding the role of clergy in politics. The contributors use a broad range of methodological approaches to look at the many factors involved &, although the findings are diverse, there is agreement that the interplay of religion & politics is shaped by the contexts within which clergy live & work.
