  • A striking number of political cartoons published in the year after the fall of the Berlin Wall use stereotypes of such powerless and often devalued groups as women, children, and the disabled to represent the German Democratic Republic (GDR). In general, a powerful male role is assigned to the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG). These images are closely linked to the language and imagery used to discuss unification, borrowed from the world of courting, sex, and marriage. Analysis reveals the dynamic between gender images and the dominant patriarchal political ideology. The repetitious presentation of sexist images and language to define German unification reinforced if not directly supported Western capitalist interests. Ultimately, connecting the images of subaltern groups with the GDR helped justify the economic takeover of the GDR as an inferior entity. These images served to disadvantage GDR women, the biggest losers in the unification process.
