  • A report of results of two studies investigating fear of success for Ms & Fs in sex-linked occupations. Data were gathered from one group of 30 Ms & 30 Fs, & from a second group of 19 Ms & 19 Fs. Ss listened to stories about a M or a F in the role of engineer, child psychologist, or nurse. In the first study, men responded only to stimuli containing M names, women to F names. In the second study, men & women responded randomly to either stimulus. After presentation of the stimulus, Ss were asked to write a story in response to what they had heard. Ss' stories were then rated on a 7-point "fear of success" scale, & were also analyzed for perceived status in each job. Results revealed that engineer & child psychologist did not differ in perceived status, but nurse was viewed as having much lower status. In both studies, Ms exhibited the most fear of success for the nurse role, women for the engineer role. It was concluded that fear of success was strongly related to M dominance of occupations. M.
