  • These 15 essays, published as part of the Poznan Studies in the Philosophy of the Sciences & the Humanities (Leszek Nowak, editor in chief), critically examine the social philosophy of Agnes Heller, whose phenomenologically inspired work on philosphical psychology & anthropology, modernity, Hegelianism, & the philosophy of history has influenced a generation of social thinkers. Here, Heller's chief philosophical concerns are laid bare in several papers by internationally known philosophers & sociologists, elucidating her work in contrast to that of others who have addressed similar concerns. Essay topics include: the failure of Georg Lukacs's Budapest school to adequately address the links between historicity & universality in human values; Heller's critique of Hannah Arendt's distinction between modernity & classical polity; & Heller's philosophical anthropology & her successful merger of phenomenology & Hegelian Marxism in her theory of everyday life. Heller addresses each contributor -- criticisms in a closing essay that ranges over a variety of topics -- the nature of philosophical reflection, the modernity/postmodernity debate, & the nature of justice & politics. The 15 (unnumbered) essays are preceded by the editor's Introduction & followed by Heller's reply. Mihaly Vajda -- A Lover of Philosophy -- A Lover of Europe. Phillippe Despoix -- On the Possibility of a Philosophy of Values. A Dialogue within the Budapest School. Martin Jay -- Women in Dark Times: Agnes Heller and Hannah Arendt. Johann P. Arnason -- The Human Condition and the Modern Predicament. Richard J. Bernstein -- Agnes Heller: Philosophy, Rational Utopia and Praxis. Zygmunt Bauman -- Narrating Modernity. Peter Beilharz -- Theories of History -- Agnes Heller and R. G. Collingwood. Richard Wolin -- Heller's Theory of Everyday Life. Paul Harrison -- Radical Philosophy and the Theory of Modernity.
