  • An examination of problems that arise in the sociology of education, exploring some of the methods used to study them, & focusing on the "real" level of education -- the level of composite knowledge that individuals actually possess, but that has no formal expression -- as well as inequality of opportunity relative to both real & formal access to education, prepared for the International Bureau of Education, & presented in 6 Chpts with an Introduction. (1) Modernization of Society and the Evolution of the Population's Real Level of General Education -- examines the combined action of factors affecting education's improvement of skills in the individual. Some of these factors, it is argued, are related to education, & some to biological, psychological, & social factors, standard of living, family relationships, forms of production & trade, means of communication, etc. Data from UNESCO & the Educational Resources Information Center are used to explore how these factors affect the real level of education that members of society in the US & Switzerland are "allowed" to obtain. (2) Social Background, Schooling and Real Level of General Education -- examines how differences in social background affect general educational attainment, contending that the motivations, means, & opportunities to learn are not equally distributed among all social classes. It is also noted that the same can be said of factors that stifle the desire to learn, hinder its realization, or lead to forgetting what has been learned. The factors determining one's level of knowledge are explored. (3) Factors Affecting the Inequality of Knowledge -- explores how the abilities demonstrated by an individual in a given subject are affected by the interaction between personal & contextual variables, & how these factors affect the inequality of knowledge. (4) An Analysis of Explanatory Impacts -- discusses statistical methods used to determine explained differences (those that depend on the factor or factors evaluated) & unexplained differences relative to attained knowledge level. (5) Inequality of Opportunity and Explanatory Impacts -- evaluates the effects that social background & formal level of education have on inequality of levels of knowledge, exemplified with data on young Swiss men & their level of reading comprehension & knowledge of math history, languages, etc, followed by an Annex: Selected Data concerning Young Men (Switzerland, 1984). (6) Education Selection and Social Mobility -- after summarizing the findings of the previous chapters, explores the inequality of educational opportunity & its relationship to occupational distribution. 43 Tables, 13 Figures, 145 References.
