This primarily qualitative study of the effects of mass production & commercialization on music cultures of small countries is based on data from personal interviews, focusing on significant events from around 1970 to the early 1980s, which are used to reconstruct patterns of change in music institutions & organizations, legislation, & business & mass media policies affecting music in the following countries: Jamaica, Trinidad, Tunisia, Tanzania, Kenya, Sri Lanka, Chile, Wales, & the Nordic countries. Particular emphasis is placed on the role of transnational music corporations, government policies, technological innovation, & the tension between global standardization & maintenance of local cultures. 16 Tables, 13 Figures, 29 Illustrations, 70 References.
