  • This work, originally published in 1959, argues for a symbolic-interactionist understanding of identity as the product of interactions between individuals & collectively structured activity. Within this perspective, language is conceived as a basic classificatory system that places the self in a particular relationship with & directs individual actions toward others. The act of appraising one's relationship to others & to oneself is necessarily indeterminate because changing contexts of interaction elicit distinct evaluations. Such concepts as commitment, possession, alienation, & sacrifice are addressed according to this framework of indeterminacy. Social scientists wishing to focus on interaction in institutional settings like hospitals or factories are directed to the notion of motivation as a conceptual link between social structures & individual action. The theme of adult identity development is then considered, drawing on sociological & anthropological work done on child development & status passages, & illustrated with the example of temporary changes of identity within institutions & more permanent alterations of identity like brainwashing. Generational changes in identity are considered & speculations presented concerning how changes of identity are often minimized such that persons experience a sense of continuity in their identities. The symbolic character of group membership is argued to be more a matter of historical than autobiographical circumstances, a fact which requires a different orientation on the part of sociologists interested in tracing social identities at a particular historical moment. A Preface & Introduction to the Transaction Edition precede the book's 7 Chpts, accompanied by notes. (1) Language and Identity. (2) Self-Appraisals and the Course of Action. (3) Interaction. (4) Transformations of Identity. (5) Change and Continuity. (6) Membership and History. (7) A Concluding Note. D. M. Smith
