Argues that the relationship between nationalism & feminism consists of at least three levels: (1) women's personal engagement in nationalist movements; (2) feminist discourse about the role of women in nationalist movements; & (3) theorization about nationalism & how it may influence feminist theory as a political practice & epistemological critique. Important themes in each of these levels are discussed in terms of research conducted on the Welsh nationalist movement. It is suggested that, while that movement tends to perpetuate many sexist practices, it is not delegitimized as a basis of a national imagined community. Further, feminism & nationalism are descirbed as similar, in that both are universalizing discourses based on a difference that nonetheless have had to confront cross-cutting differences that trouble their presumed universalization. In particular, nationalist discourses are shown to perpetuate patriarchal images of the nation, while feminist discourses are demonstrated to ignore the experiences of Third World women. It is concluded that a feminist discourse about nationalism must explore the epistemological contradictions in a practice & discourse of national liberation that works to marginalize & oppress women. 30 References.
