  • Presented is a study of the social effects of a particular French engineering school, the Ecole Centrale des Arts et Manufactures, within the larger framework of modern French industrial development, in 8 Chpts, with a Foreword by David S. Landes. The school's origins, curriculum, philosophy, development, & influences upon the upward social mobility of its graduates & upon French scientific & cultural life in the nineteenth century are discussed. Chpt (1) The Origins - describes the founding of the school in Paris in 1829, & economic, intellectual, & historical factors leading to its establishment. (2) The Matrix: Secondary Schools and the Conflict over Technological Culture - reviews the classicist traditions in higher education in France & the restoration of secondary education (enseignement secondaire) & the conflict between proponents of classical & modern curricula. (3) Who Attended and How They Got There - describes recruiting techniques, social origins of students in comparison with those at the older Ecole Polytechnique, & implications for social stratification. (4) La Science Industrielle - describes engineering instruction, patterns of labeling concepts (eg, of "industrial science") & the formation of the concept of a typical civil engineer. (5) How They Were Taught - describes educational structure, methodology, & curriculum. (6) The Curriculum Justified - examines two speeches on the importance of the school's program & on the issue of curricular changes. (7) The School as a Society - describes the social molding of students effected within the school's society.
