  • This collection of papers examining the relation between the social theory of Karl Marx & Max Weber, in III PARTS & 7 Chpts, with editor's Introduction, is Vol 2 in the Key Issues in Sociological Theory series (edited by Jeffrey C. Alexander & Jonathan Turner), based on papers from annual miniconferences on issues of "overriding theoretical importance" (this vol is based on 1985's conference) held by the Theory Section of the American Sociological Assoc. Introduction -- searches for conceptual & methodological similarities between Marx & Weber, reviewing the historical & institutional context of the debate about their work. Focus is on their treatment of contradiction, revolution, the SC-SS relation, the role of culture, & the self. PART I - THEORETICAL OVERVIEW - contains (1) Giovanni Arrighi & Terence K. Hopkins -- Theoretical Space and Space for Theory in World-Historical Social Science -- maps the theoretical space opened up by Weber, Marx, & Adam Smith, tracing the changing type of DofL in which they anchored their arguments; (2) Morton G. Wenger -- Class Closure and the Historical/Structural Limits of the Marx-Weber Convergence -- considers the benefits for Marxist & Weberian theory of analysis & reconstruction of Weber's inequality theory. Weber & Marx had irreconcilable differences on the fundamental ontological nature of SC, it is pointed out. PART II - CLASS CONFLICT AND THE STATE - includes (3) Val Burris -- The Neo-Marxist Synthesis of Marx and Weber on Class -- contrasts contemporary Marxist & Weberian theories of SC & capitalist SC structure, focusing on the development of a neo-Marxist theory of SC that incorporates Weberian concepts; (4) Robert Hanneman & Randall Collins -- A Dynamic Simulation of Marx's Model of Capitalism -- attempts to demonstrate the power of dynamic models in accounting for historical change, presenting a computer simulation of the classical Marxist theory. The theory of Marx & Engels is defended as a systemic mechanism, rather than as a philosophical construction; & (5) Amy S. Wharton -- Labor Segmentation and Gender Divisions: Marxist Versus Weberian Approaches -- examines Weberian mainstream & neo-Marxist approaches to labor segmentation & gender divisions. The Weberian & Marxist contributions to segmentation analysis are evaluated, along with their broader implications. PART III - CULTURE AND IDEOLOGY - concludes the vol with (6) Roslyn Wallach Bologh -- Marx, Weber, and Masculine Theorizing: A Feminist Analysis -- argues that Marx's & Weber's theories are flawed by a masculine bias that ignores the situation of women & the relation of public & private worlds. Proposed instead is a feminist dialectical theory stressing the relationship between "internal subjective self-change & external objective social change," between private & public spheres, & between individuals & communities; & (7) Bryan S. Turner -- Marx, Weber, and the Coherence of Capitalism: The Problem of Ideology -- compares & contrasts Marxist & Weberian views of ideology, centering on the reconciliation of workers with capitalist economic relations. 3 Tables, 12 Figures, 1 Appendix, 349 References.
