  • Vol 174 in the Sage Library of Social Research, presented in 7 Chpts with an Appendix, investigates how dual-career couples in the US cope with the demands of their jobs while maintaining the quality of their marital relationship. Interview data obtained from 489 husbands & wives in the Cincinnati, Ohio, metropolitan area between Oct 1982 & Mar 1983 are analyzed to determine the psychosocial characteristics of partners & their relationships that are most conducive to marital satisfaction. Focus is on couples in which both spouses have relatively equal occupational status or earning power. Results provide insight into the relationship between social structure & people's internal beliefs, attitudes, & self-concepts, & suggest that contemporary gender-role issues & marital instability often result from a lag between these structural relations & male/female prototypical internal states. It is concluded that US society is gradually evolving in a direction that supports & enhances the possibility of equality between the sexes; macrostructural changes that support this are described.
