  • The theoretical & ethical dimensions of the concept of anomie are explored in a chronological study of writings from the perspectives of sociology of knowledge & history of ideas. Unifying themes include two antithetical ethical approaches to the concept, one emphasizing the social nature of morality, the other its individual nature. The vol is presented in 5 Chpts with a Preface, an Introduction, & a Conclusion. (1) Anomia and Social Theory in Ancient Greece -- see SA 34:1/86Q4426. (2) Anomia in the Biblical Literature -- reviews the range of meanings of anomia in the Bible & the Jewish apocalyptic literature & compares these meanings to sociological anomie. (3) Anomy and Reason in the English Renaissance -- examines the revival of the concept in seventeenth-century English religious disputes focusing on the issues of freedom, natural law, & rational morality. (4) The Ethics of Anomie in Nineteenth-Century France -- see SA 32:2/84N7190. (5) Contemporary Anomie Literature -- describes the main themes in this literature: those of Robert K. Merton & Leo Srole, & various interpretations of Emile Durkheim. It is argued that there has been a shift away from the Durkheimian tradition toward an instrumental use of the term. Conclusion -- offers an outline of interaction between the cognitive & ethical approaches. Bibliographic Appendix -- including 649 references, contains reference lists of: Classical Greek Literature; Biblical Literature; Renaissance and Modern Literature, 1500-1884; & Modern and Contemporary Literature, 1885-1986; as well as an Alphabetical List of Authors, 1885-1986.
