  • It has been well known by both public and state institutions alike that Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet was responsible for orders to arrest, detain, and execute citizens whom he believed to be enemies of the state. On November 28, 2004, the Chilean government released documents that show the scope of this torture campaign to exceed 35 thousand cases. In addition, it has been revealed-partly through American efforts to crack down on international money laundering as part of the war on terror-that Pinochet had established a complex financial network that he used to funnel more than 13 million dollars into accounts in various countries. What is still more significant in this respect is that the Chilean military has come to the forefront in order to assume responsibility for the actions they carried out under Pinochet. What results is a fuller picture-even within state institutions-of the extent of Pinochet's human rights violations. However, as is discussed here, the compensation made to the victims of the Pinochet regime is disproportionately minor in relation to the tribulations they have suffered. This article presents these latest developments in the Pinochet case.
