Beschreibungen/Notizen
  • This first volume generated by the Multi-City Study of Urban Inequality, a research project designed to explore social/economic divisions in Atlanta (GA), Boston (MA), Detroit (MI), & Los Angeles (CA), draws on historical & contemporary sources to explain how metropolitan Boston rose from a disastrous manufacturing decline in the 1970s, to become a high tech/service industry leader in the 1990s. Primary data were obtained from a 1995 survey of 1,820 households that provided economic/demographic dimensions & examined attitudes about race/ethnicity, mobility opportunities, & job/neighborhood quality. Although new commercial centers were created beyond the traditional city limits, a flow of immigrants & young professionals moved into the city, revitalizing depopulated downtown neighborhoods. The improved economy has lessened racial tensions & promoted a more fluid multicultural environment; however, African Americans are still more likely to have lower paid, part-time/contingent jobs with fewer advancement opportunities. Nonetheless, Boston's triple transformation (demographics, industrial structures, & space) has had a positive impact on racial attitudes, patterns of residential segregation, & the distribution of success in the labor market, that offers lessons to other cities. Boston's future as a place where all residents can enjoy its economic & cultural amenities will require a commitment to meet the needs of the poor & utilize an eager minority labor force. The book contains 10 Chpts. 80 Tables, 78 Figures, 8 Maps, 3 Appendixes, 447 References. J. Lindroth
