  • The huge differences between Africa and the other developing countries, deserve at least an attempt at an explanation. The passivity of Africans in international affairs has freqquently been noted. The great poverty of the continent today is also well known. Among reasons sometimes given for the problems of sub-Saharan Africa is that Africans are genetically inferior. It is teh view of this paper, however, that everyone is equally a product of their environment and that if the white race had somehow been forced to live in sub-Saharan Africa, it would have been equally unsuccessful in developing advanced socities. The author argues that much of sub-Saharan Africa's record of relative poverty and isolation can be understood as primarily the result of its geographic position, which consists of three aspects.
