• Over the past 20 years, China has transformed itself from an economic nonentity into a force to be reckoned with. But in important ways, it remains unperformed, unrepentant - and unprepared to run the risks that real change will ultimately require. In China's cities and towns, the monochrome tones of Maoism have largely disappeared replaced by brasher capitalist hues: blue glass and chrome for corporate offices, and neon red for the corporate logo. What has not changed is that the Communist Party continues to repress anyone who questions the regime's legitimacy.
