  • This article examines Carl Schmitt's Weimar writings. This analysis draws upon the "rhetoric of reaction" model as developed by Albert O. Hirschman. Although antiparliamentarianism & antiliberalism have always been the key elements of Schmitt's thought, there is a clear shift in the way he expressed these ideas. Schmitt first insisted on the "perversity" of parliamentarism, contending that it was counterproductive. As soon as the parliamentry regime started to show signs of collapse, Schmitt more insistently described the parliament as a "jeopardy" for democracy &, ultimately, for a State defined in authoritarian & warlike terms. In spite of the arguments he made afterwards, Schmitt was never interested in saving the Weimar Republic. He did seek to undermine it. Adapted from the source document.
