  • In this special issue on Jehovahs Witnesses under two German dictatorships, the author examines the specific conditions of imprisonment from the perspective of the prisoners in the criminal justice system. Analysis of oral history statements & reports of the victims during the three phases of persecution; 1950 55 & 1956 76, & 1977 89 provide a background description of the Witnesses delineates the number of detainees, & convictions for refusal to perform military service. Reports by jailed Witnesses distinguish the difference between the three penal systems in terms of accusations, hunger, repression of worship, prohibition of Bible reading, marking of prisoners, the educational aspect of punishment, & refusal to work. The regarding of the Witnesses as political enemies by the communist government of East Germany is concluded to have been a disastrous misconception that resulted in punishment that was disproportional to the so called crimes of the nonviolent Witnesses.
