It is demonstrated that certain rules in the practice of mediation in modern negotiation theory were already known as far aback as the time of the Greeks, according to the writings of Tucidides on the Peloponesian War (431-404 BCE). For Tucidides, an elementary principle in negotiation & mediation is not to impose any solution on the parties, but let them negotiate. He stresses the need for flexibility & for all parties in a conflict to be satisfied with the solution, & for the mediators to be neutral & impartial in order to gain the trust of the parties in conflict.
