This article examines the Jewish settlers in East Jerusalem and the West Bank, in an attempt to explain their choice of place of living. The settlers fall into three main categories on the background of their social composition and ideological motivation; urban, cooperative and ideological settlements, respectively. The two former types are established by Israeli authorities, and the inhabitants explain their choice of place of living with reference to the financial benefits living in state-sponsored settlements gives. The ideological settlements are in comparison established without recognition by the authorities, and for these settlers it is the territory itself that is the decisive factor. Amongst the ideological settlers, further categorisation is made with reference to internal differences within the ideological settlement movement, overall in relation to the degree of religiosity and their view on the Palestinians.
