  • This report investigates whether xenophobic & neoliberal ideologies -- playing a decisive role in previous elections to the Austrian National Assembly continue to be attractive subsequent to the last election of 2002. Based on representative surveys, we show how party followers' attitudes have changed over the 1998-2003 period. The results indicate that the attitudinal dimensions of xenophobia & neoliberalism both substantially correlate at these timepoints of observation. Xenophobia among the population has decreased to an insignificant extent between 1998 & 2003, yet neoliberal initiatives & ideas have lost far more of their appeal. At the beginning of our observation period, followers of the two rightist parties (Austrian Peoples Party & Freedom Party) were still very similar with respect to the dimension of neoliberalism, Social Democratic Party (SPO) supporters also feeling attracted. By 2003, followers of SPO & the Austrian Peoples Party (OVP) had dissociated themselves from neoliberal views, while sympathizers of the Freedom Party (FPO) -- reduced by half that year continued to maintain such perspectives. The "xenophobia plus neoliberal policies" winning formula was thus comparatively successful at the end of the 90s, yet has since lost appeal. Roughly one third of the workers held both xenophobic & neoliberal views in 1998, decreasing to one fifth by 2003. Tables, References. Adapted from the source document.
