• Climate change & supply security define the search for ecological & economically sustainable energy sources. Biofuels appear to achieve both objectives equally, yet doubts have increasingly been raised about whether these are truly a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels. CO2 emissions from production & distribution as well as use must be considered, & numerous sustainability problems related to biodiversity, food supplies, & environmental & social protection can emerge along the supply chain.
