• Investigates the levels of success met by countries in their attempts to industrialize. Four countries are analyzed in detail - South Korea, Brazil, India, and Nigeria - over the twentieth century. It is argued that cohesive-capitalist states have been most effective at promoting industrialization and neo-patrimonial states the least. Implications for the development of economies in these states are further explored.
