Beschreibungen/Notizen
  • The authors respond to two contributions to ELT Journal (Volume 51/2) by Mark Tully and Rama Mathew. Drawing upon their experience in South Africa, the authors spell out a role for ELT specialists in maintaining and promoting multilingualism. It is argued that while ELT specialists must, of course, contribute to policy debates on the hegemony of English and the maintenance of multilingualism, they should also engage in 'professional activism' (Prabhu 1987: 108) by demonstrating through classroom practice the positions they take on multilingualism. Further, the authors emphasize the role of ELT specialists in making classroom practice visible and hence offering teachers inspirational examples of pedagogic change. (Verlag, adapt.).
