• Donatschnitzer is defined in Jakob Grimm's & Wilhelm Grimm's Deutsches Worterbuch ([German Dictionary], Leipzig, 1854) as "a clash with the first rules of Latin grammar." The view of parts of speech presented in Aelius Donatus's Latin grammar is outlined, & the question is raised whether parts of speech, accidence, & their definitions are universal. Donatus's texts refer to constitutive activities in human speech: referring, stating, alternating, determining, & connecting. It is argued that these categories make up a proto-syntax of language. The undiminished presence of the grammatical views of Donatus, the connotations of the expression Donat, the didactic & speculative sides of this grammar, as well as the entities that make up the eight primary parts of speech in Donatus's work are detailed. 3 Tables, 3 Figures, 40 References.
