In 1991, Dr. Weiner chose encompassing diversity and demanding equity as the theme for his presidential year. The American Psychiatric Association demanded equity for their patients and also for psychiatrists, calling for an end to stigma and discrimination based on myths. Psychiatrists are the most intensively and broadly trained of all the so-called mental health disciplines, the most carefully examined and credentialed, the most accountable and liable, the most responsible and ethically rigorous, and the most competent and cost effective of all medical specialties to diagnose and treat mental illness.
