  • The 'euthanasia' program involved the killing of more than 100,000 psychiatric ill and mentally handicapped people as a consequence of the social and health policy of the National Socialists. Since the early 1980s, much work has been done on both the ideological background and the actual practice of the 'euthanasia' program. As early as during the planing stages of the systematic killings, some psychiatrists involved realized that these could provide the opportunity for a new kind of research without ethical restrictions. Professor Carl Schneider, who held the Chair of Psychiatry and Neurology at the University of Heildelberg 1933-1945 was the protagonist in this connection between psychiatric research and 'euthanasia'. Presents the first results of a project designed to reconstruct the actual activities of Schneider's research team in Heidelberg. The main sources are the patients' files, which are preserved in the archives of the psychiatric hospital of the university, documents from other psychiatric institutions linked to Schneider's activities, and files of the postwar trials of some protagonists of the 'euthanasia' program.
