• Development has to be sustainable and equitable. Only science and technology (SandT) can provide this, although it is hampered by competing interests such as the caste system and personal interests. SandT can empower people to improve the quality of life through access to appropriate technology. National efforts over the past 50 years have led to improved socioeconomic indicators, but the gap between urban and rural poverty has grown, and deforestation has led to increased problems in rural areas. Discusses how SandT might be able to ease a way forward. (Original abstract - amended)
