Johannes Brahms' arrangements of a folk-song entitled 'In Stiller Nacht' for chorus and solo voice are superb in their linkage of melody and lyrics. The folk song's origins, however, have not been established. Its theme has religious origins as it appears to depict Christ's agony on the Mount of Olives. The theory that Brahms must have composed part or even all cannot be adequately supported. What is certain is that Brahms loved folk music and used much of it as basis for his own compositions.
