Individuals typically rely on their default self-perceptions to infer others' views of them (i.e., metaperceptions). However, under asymmetric outcome-dependency, the desire for greater accuracy should preclude a strict reliance on trait self-perceptions, instead fostering a more bottom-up metaperceptive processing strategy. Thirty-eight participants completed a measure of self-esteem, were interviewed by a stranger, and then were either told that the interviewer did or did not control their outcomes. As anticipated, trait self-perceptions positively predicted metaperceptions in the default, but not in the outcome-dependent situation. Instead of relying on default self-perceptions, participants in the outcome-dependent condition appeared to focus on the interviewer's reactions to them. These results suggest that outcome-dependence fosters atypical metaperceptive processing. Discussion focuses on the theoretical implications of these results and also on the issue of metaperceptive accuracy. [PUBLICATION ABSTRACT]
