• ABSTRACT IN FRENCH: Au cours du XXe siècle, le Brésil s'est doté d'une diplomatie culturelle active visant à défendre ses intérêts économiques et géostratégiques sur l'échiquier international. Dès les années 1920, le ministère des Relations extérieures - Itamaraty - élabore les outils d'une politique culturelle essentiellement pragmatique, dont le contenu et les structures oscillent en fonction des acteurs, des régimes politiques et des conceptions de l'identité nationale. Première synthèse sur le sujet, cet article retrace la genèse de la diplomatie culturelle brésilienne à travers ses institutions, ses moyens d'action, ses destinataires et ses objectifs affichés. Il propose une réflexion sur la signification de l'action culturelle pour une puissance moyenne de l'Extrême-Occident. // ABSTRACT IN ENGLISH: During the 20th century, Brazil developed an active cultural diplomacy in order to defend its economic and geostrategic interests on the global chessboard. Beginning in the 1920s, the Brazilian Foreign Office - Itamaraty - mapped out tools for pragmatic cultural promotion, the contents and structures of which fluctuated depending on the actors, political regimes and conceptions of national identity. A first synthesis on the subject, this article studies the genesis of Brazilian cultural diplomacy, considering its institutions, recipients and targets, and reflects upon the meaning of cultural politics for a middle power of the Western world.
