  • The subject matter of Pro-Family Politics and Fringe Parties in Canada (henceforth Pro-Family Politics) is far narrower than the title implies. Chris MacKenzic's book is less about the broader pro-family movement in Canada or the many fringe parties scattered across the country than it is about a single, now defunct, provincial political party. The purpose of Pro-Family Politics is to analyze the life cycle of the Family Coalition Party of British Columbia (FCP), BC's first pro-life and pro-family party. The FCP was founded in 1991 when the BC Social Credit Party collapsed. As the Socreds moved toward a more secular ideology, pro-family activists no longer had a home in mainstream politics and opted to establish a new party to promote their agenda. The FCP was essentially a "party of last resorts" (11). The life cycle of the FCP was short-lived. The group merged with four other right-wing parties to form the BC Unity Party in 2001, hoping to rejoin mainstream party politics. Despite what might seem to be a narrow focus, Pro-Family Politics is a very rich and interesting book. MacKcn/ic brings together a number of literatures and theoretical perspectives in his analysis of the FCP. Scholars in various areas of Canadian politics will find the result insightful. This intensive study of one fringe party tells us much about the world of such parties.
