• In 1992, there appeared in Djakarta an unusual book entitled Jalan Hidupku, Autobiografi Seorang Gay Priyayi Jawa Awal Abad XX (The Course of My Life, The Autobiography of a Gay Javanese Priyayi at the Beginning of the 20th Century), edited by the diligent peranakan folklorist Amen Budiman, and published by the Penerbitan Apresiasi Gay Jakarta. It did not last long in Soeharto's "public sphere," since it was quickly banned as immoral by the Attorney General. Here, Anderson explores the life of Soetjipto, whom people know nothing about except those things he shares in "Djalan Sampoerna," and examines the power and freshness of his works.
