This paper traces the trajectories of different types of anti-dam mobilisation in independent India with a focus on the well-known Narmada Bachao Andolan. While the studies on anti-displacement mobilisations produced a substantial body of knowledge, they are useful neither to the civil society activists nor to the policy makers. It is suggested that, in order to render sociology relevant, we need to combine the sociology of movements and polices with sociology for movement and policies.
