  • For those involved in the design and construction of CMGI Field, the future home of the National Football League's New England Patriots, the project could accurately be described as an environmental engineering project. The once-thriving Neponset River flowed directly beneath the site, buried in a culvert. The river has long been of concern to local environmental groups. When the time came to build the stadium, the interests of the owners and the environmental groups converged. The river would be daylighted, or restored to its natural, aboveground condition, and moved about 400 ft to the east to a newly dedicated 3,000 ft long corridor along the edge of the property. Such a move would not only produce benefits in water quality and wildlife habitat; it would also place the river in a more appropriate, out-of-the-way channel relative to the rest of the project site.
