• A new solid state thermolysis method was proposed for the synthesis of Ag2S crystallites, using an air-stable single-source molecular precursor (silver diethyldithiocarbamate, Ag-DDTC). The proposed method involved two simple and mild steps: first, Ag-DDTC was prepared directly from the precipitation reaction of silver nitrate and sodium diethyldithiocarbamate in distilled water under the ambient condition; second; without the protection of vacuum environment or inert gases, Ag2S crystallites could be obtained by directly heating the Ag-DDTC in air at 200 deg C for 3 h. The obtained products were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), and thermogravimetric and differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC).
