Magnetorheological elastomers (MREs) are a kind of smart material whose rheological properties could be controlled by the applied magnetic field. They are composed of rubber and magnetizable particles. When the mixtures are cured in the presence of a magnetic field, the particles are arranged in chains, columns or layers due to the MR effect. The unique characteristics that their modulus could be controlled by the magnetic field reversely, quickly made them could be applied for many fields such as stiffness controllable suspensions and adaptive surface. Our recent research progress on MREs was introduced. It includes the material fabrication, the testing system and the mechanical properties, and their application in semi-active vibration absorption technology.
