• The World Bank's Adequate Housing Index exposes stark disparities, with a third of homes in emerging economies failing to meet adequacy standards. A systematic review found that housing refurbishments: incorporating suitable ventilation, moisture control, heating-cooling, and insulation to mitigate dampness, mould, indoor air pollution, and extreme temperature exposure reduces the risk of respiratory diseases, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and mental health disorders. To promote fulfilment of housing rights for all, in August, 2023, the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to adequate housing called for urgent action to address homelessness and inadequate housing worldwide, emphasising the need for comprehensive policies, increased financing, and a human rights-based approach.
