The fracture behavior of a commercial Zr41.2Ti13.8Cu12.5Ni10.0Be22.5 bulk-metallic glass (BMG) during the uniaxial compressive deformation was investigated. It was reported that fracture in this alloy causes a temperature rise, which is high enough to initiate a viscous flow in the vicinity of the fractured surface (the fracture-affected zone (FAZ)). Based on the finite-element analysis of the one-dimensional heat transfer from the fractured surface into the FAZ, it is estimated that the instant temperature rise during the fracture of the Zr41.2Ti13.8Cu12.5Ni10.0Be22.5 BMG alloy could reach as high as 2770 K.
