In retrospect, the public health and media response reveals much about the social valences of birth defects and assumptions about race and reproduction in relation to marginalised Latinx populations. According to a 2012 retrospective analysis of postpartum samples from a case-control study at the border, there was no significant difference in median serum and red blood cell folate concentration between women affected by NTDs and controls.
