• National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Climate Prediction Center is predicting a strong El Nino event for summer and fall of 2023, following a two-year La Nina event. The El Nino-Southern Oscillation (or ENSO) is a climate pattern defined by sea surface temperature and precipitation departures from normal across the equatorial Pacific Ocean that can influence weather and climate patterns across the US and around the world. El Nino is the warm phase of ENSO when ocean temperatures are warmer and precipitation is greater than normal in the area spanning the central to eastern Pacific Ocean. In mid-March, scientists measured the highest ocean temperature on record, signaling the shift to El Nino and with it the possibility of extreme heat, dangerous tropical cyclones, and rain.
